All countries have strict trademark use requirements, but few are as fastidious as the USA.
This often comes as a surprise and an inconvenience to foreign trademark owners who want to register their brands in the US.
In all jurisdictions the requirement of use runs like a golden thread through trademark life and law. Right from the development of a brand until its demise, a trademark right depends on the use made of it.
Suzaan attended the 27th Annual Fordham Intellectual Property Law & Policy Conference in New York City from 25 until 26 April 2019. The conference focused on a range of key current IP issues, from artificial intelligence, multilateral developments and fair use, to USA and EU trademark and copyright law developments and enforcement.
Suzaan enjoyed her attendance at the International Trade Mark Association (INTA) Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, USA from 17 – 22 May 2019. The conference attracted over 11 000 trade mark and IP lawyers from all over the world, a new record for INTA. As always the meeting was an intensely busy and productive one where Suzaan met with clients and colleagues from all four corners, at the same time as catching up on new global and regional developments in trademark law and having fun at the many receptions and dinners hosted around the beautiful city of Boston. She looks forward to attending next year’s meeting in Singapore!
